Pictures of design process, through to Final Outcome. (WEEK 1)

In groups we were shown a demonstration of paper modelling on a stand (mannequin).
The aim of this exercise was to understand the relationship of translating a 2d design into a 3Dimensional garment. The process is shown and explained below.

1. Using dot & cross we wrapped the mannequin and pinned it in place.
2.We then started to fit the paper as closely as we could to the bodice using sellotape. We began by taping around the top, waist and bottom of the bodice and in a figure of eight around the bust to give more definition.

3. After covering the entire mannequin like so...

4. ...We drew on our design drawing in the seams and labelled our pattern peices and included notches. We then cut down the centreback and removed it from the mannequin.

5. We then cut up the pattern pieces, added seam allowances and recut on dot and cross.

6.Finally using our pattern peices we started to create a new 3D form and record pictures of our design. And here is our final outcome.

We were pleased with the collar and side detail in particular as we liked the volume it gave. I took away valuable learning, firstly that you must always consider the garment as a whole and also had to understand where seam lines had to be positioned in order to make a pattern peice lie flat. For example ensuring a seam line goes across the bust.
